Sailing ships in the harbor in the moonlight

Caspar David Friedrich painted this moment time and again: the figures or ships have reached a boundary. A horizon, an abyss, a wall. We do not know whether they can cross it. We can only guess at the transcendental beyond the boundary. The artist leaves us enough room for our own reflections. But one thing remains certain: these people's journey is not at an end; they are about to cross a threshold. Only beyond it may their journey be over.
