Helena shot upright in bed.
The nightmare shattered instantly.
She gasped for breath, drenched in sweat, trembling violently beneath the blankets. She was shivering all over.
“I’m sorry! I’m sorry! Lord, forgive me!” Helena cried.
Colonel Larkin, who had just come off guard duty, heard the commotion and knocked on the door. There was no response. He could hear her cry.
“Helena, are you alright?” he called out from his side of the door.
Helena covered her mouth to stifle her crying.
Larkin was not angry with her. He was a tired soldier, concerned about his friend.
“Helena, I’m concerned about you. May I come in?”
He could still hear the Carmelite crying in her cell.
“A simple knock will suffice for a yes.”
There was a long pause. And more crying.
Finally there was a knock.

Larkin entered and found Helena standing in the center of the room. She was wearing a t-shirt and a pair of PT shorts. Her body was covered in sweat.
“Helena, are you alright?” he asked.
He looked at her.
Not angry.
Not betrayed.
Concerned.
“Another nightmare?”
Helena nodded.
“A very bad one.”
Another nod.
“Do you need me to wake up Fairbairn?”
“No, please. Don’t wake anyone else.”
“As you wish,” he said.
“I’m sorry. I’m sorry.”
“There’s no need to apologize for a bad dream.”
He paused.
“Do you want to talk about it?”
Helena looked Larkin in the eye but quickly turned away.
“No,” she whispered.
She wanted to tell him badly, but she couldn’t. It was hard to tell him. Besides she didn’t want her nightmare to become reality.
“That’s all right. You don't need to tell me.” He paused. “Would you like a cup of tea?”
“I would. Thank you.”
