🫧 What “Snot Bubbles” means for Mossback
In water buffalo (and other semi-aquatic mammals), snot bubbles are mucus-and-air bubbles released from the nostrils while submerged or partially submerged.
Here’s what’s happening:
• Nasal mucus traps debris
Mud, plant particles, parasites, and microorganisms get caught in the thick nasal mucus.
• Controlled air release
Mossback slowly exhales through his nostrils underwater, forming visible bubbles (like in your image).
• Clearing & sealing the nostrils
The bubbles help:
• flush mucus outward
• keep water from flooding the nasal passages
• maintain clear airways while diving or feeding
• Breathing regulation
It also helps equalize pressure and prepare the nostrils for resurfacing.
