His reluctance to harm those who have been improperly sentenced does not outweigh his natural survival instincts, and so he does what he must to bring a swift end to his opponents without suffering.

The spectators whisper that the marks Tarkus makes on his own back signify the many victims that he has taken pleasure in slaughtering, while Tarkus is quietly keeping count of how many innocents he must avenge when he can finally escape this hell.
