When I lived in Vancouver during the latter 60s, I loved visiting the Vancouver Library, one of the best around then. No one could take out a book on mushrooms and identifying them. Not that it wasn't allowed but because every book had been stolen. When they tried replacing the books, they were stolen too so they just gave up.
I lived in Chinatown the and would regularly walk to visit Stanley Park. It was an ongoing, but true, joke that you could never find in the park or any other places any mushrooms that bore even a passing resemblance to psilocybin or magic mushrooms. Hippies would pick and eat them without regard to whether they were safe or not. Fortunately, there were no dangerous mushrooms that they ate though it's highly doubtful any got high on them. Heck, I was a hippie and rather partial to hallucinogens but I was never that stupid.
