*Ulwaluko* is a period of ritual isolation for Xhosa boys that marks their transition into men.  During this period, the boys are referred to as *abakhwetha* (initiates).  An *umkhwetha* (singular) spends this time away from family and friends, in a bush lodge with other *abakwetha*, being taught by selected elders about the responsibilities of manhood.

A controversial part of *ulwaluko* is circumcision.  This is traditionally performed in the bush lodge by a traditional surgeon.  Things can and do sometimes go badly wrong.  Circumcision by a medical doctor under clinical conditions is therefore being promoted, although it is often still stigmatised.

The white clay and white blanket serve primarily to warn others that *abakwetha* should not be approached by anyone other than approved elders.  The red stripes signify circumcision.
