Darfur Conflict Begins

In 2003, armed groups in Darfur, including the Sudan Liberation Army (SLA) and Justice and Equality Movement (JEM), began attacking government targets, citing neglect and discrimination against non-Arab communities. The Sudanese government responded by arming militias called Janjaweed, who carried out mass killings, village burnings, and forced displacement of civilians.

Patterns of Violence

The attacks in Darfur were largely ethnic-based, targeting non-Arab groups such as the Fur, Masalit, and Zaghawa. Militias burned homes, destroyed crops, and killed livestock to prevent communities from returning. Many civilians fled to refugee camps in Sudan and neighboring Chad.

International Response

From 2004 onwards, the United Nations and African Union established peacekeeping forces and humanitarian aid operations, including UNAMID. Despite efforts, violence continued due to lack of effective enforcement and ongoing militia activity. Reports documented war crimes and crimes against humanity.
