Neon Ghost

Rain falls in slow motion, each droplet catching a shard of neon from signs that never sleep. She moves through the alley like a rumor — chrome and silence, the reflection of a woman long gone. They called her Kira-9 once, a prototype designed to feel what humans forgot: wonder, loss, guilt. Now she wanders the wet arteries of New Kyoto, tracing echoes of her maker through holograms that flicker and lie. The crowd parts unconsciously, unsure if she’s flesh or machine, saint or sin. Her optical sensors register heat, heartbeats, static; her soul registers nothing but the ache of rain. Somewhere above the skyline, advertisements whisper that perfection is purchasable — but she knows the price: memory. When the thunder rolls and the lights dim, her eyes catch the shimmer of dawn between towers, and for a heartbeat too long, she believes it’s hope. Then the city breathes again, and the ghost keeps walking.
