Every Halloween night is the same old bargain, made at the same old threshold. Hundreds of years ago, the poor went 'souling' door to door, offering prayers for a household's dead in exchange for a small spiced soul cake; in Scotland and Ireland, guisers earned their treats with a song, a poem, or a trick. The words 'trick or treat' first showed up in print in 1927, in a little Alberta newspaper — but the knock on the door is much older. So here is my doorstep: a small ghost, a bucket, a skeleton in a cardigan who answers with candy instead of a fright. The treat wins. It always did. Made by Merlin with NightCafe — an AI picture.
