**1993: School trip – Day 1. Part 1.** On that morning at the end of May 1993, 26 excited students gathered at the bus stop in front of the school. It was that time of year when the school year was almost over and exams were far away. The class trip was just around the corner – a highlight that marked the end of the seventh grade. The big coach was already waiting with its doors open. There was a hustle and bustle everywhere: suitcases were being stowed away, last farewells were taking place, and it smelled of sunscreen and fresh rolls. Finni stood a little apart with his video camera on his shoulder, watching the colorful hustle and bustle. In 1993, when cell phones were not yet widespread and did not yet include a camera, it was something extraordinary for a 13-year-old to own a video camera. Finni was therefore rarely able to film undisturbed at such events:

**Part 2.** Again and again, another student would come and ask if he could film, what the red light meant, and whether the camera was also recording sound. But Finni was able to capture this moment without interruption, since everyone was busy with the last travel preparations. When the bus started moving, Finni and Sammy were sitting next to each other. Sammy had put on his headphones and was already absorbed in his music, while Finni looked out the window and watched the passing landscape. They still considered each other best friends, but lately they had become more distant: their hobbies had taken different directions, they met less often, and their conversations were no longer as exciting as they used to be. Finni felt a little tug in his stomach – it was as if a dark shadow was hanging over the trip. But at the same time, his heart was pounding with joyful anticipation. There was a sense of change in the air, and that wasn't necessarily a bad thing.

**Part 3.** Besides, Finni couldn't wait to escape the gray everyday life of the classroom and go on the long-awaited trip to the Eifel with his class. Finni smiled as he turned his video camera back on. He loved capturing moments, as if every moment were a short movie. There sat Luke, deeply concentrated, trying to untangle his headphones properly. There sat Alia, smiling sheepishly at the camera with red cheeks. Finni was still secretly in love with her, but it wasn't as unbearable as it was last year and she was still a good friend. A few girls were discussing who was the most handsome actor from “Beverly Hills, 90210”. The loud chatter spread throughout the bus. “Chef,” as their homeroom teacher was affectionately known, was in charge as always and shouted laughingly across the bus, ‘Quiet back there!’ even though he knew that no one would lower their voices. It was the usual ritual, but it only made him more personable.

**2009: Personal boundaries. Part 1.** “Well, how are you?” she asked as she approached him. Before Finni could react, she plopped down on the chair next to him and slapped him on the thigh in a buddy-like manner. It was a gesture that immediately threw him off balance – not only because it was surprisingly intimate for their previous contact, but also because her hand came much too close to what he considered an absolutely private area. And it became even more uncomfortable when her hand lingered a moment too long, when it seemed appropriate to him. Finni blinked, irritated by the unexpected proximity. It was not the kind of greeting he would have expected in this context – especially not from a person he hardly knew. He cleared his throat and slid a little to the side, but the moment hung in the room like an invisible tension between them. It was the second week of lectures of the winter semester 2009/10. Finni, then 29 years old, had been a familiar face in his department for years.

**Part 2.** As a long-standing student representative and tutor, he knew almost all of his fellow students at least by sight. But this semester was different. He had decided on a seminar out of interest in a rather specialized topic that did not appeal to many. Last week, he had experienced an unusual situation: he found himself sitting in a room full of strangers. He recognized the setting from the beginning of his studies, but that was a long time ago. When this fellow student had sat down with him and spoken to him, he had initially been glad of the opportunity to have a friendly conversation. They had exchanged a few words before the seminar began, no more and no less. Today, when she entered the room and walked purposefully towards him, he had initially taken it as a positive sign. But this greeting – it just didn't feel right. The lecturer entered the room, a stack of documents in her hands.

**Part 3.** With her typical friendly but focused smile, the lecturer let her gaze wander around the seminar room. “Good morning, then let's begin.” She started with a brief summary of the last session, but Finni found it difficult to follow her words. He usually enjoyed seminars like this. He liked the exchange, the new perspectives, the discussions. But today everything felt heavy. His thoughts kept circling around the situation from earlier. Was what he had experienced a form of harassment? Or was he just overreacting? Was he just too sensitive? He shook his head inwardly. It wasn't that he was sensitive – he knew when something didn't feel right. But why then did this quiet, inner question mark gnaw at him anyway? Time crept forward, and when the lecturer finally ended the seminar, Finni quickly packed up his things. It was a relief to leave the room. As he often did in his free period, he headed for the student council office, his retreat on campus.

**1997-2024: My beam of light. Part 1.** The flickering images on the screen held his attention as he made the cuts. That afternoon in 1997, Finni was sitting in his room, focused on editing a new music video. Suddenly, he heard his mother's voice calling him. She sounded excited, which sparked his curiosity. His parents were sitting in the living room, and to Finni's surprise, his older brother Tim and his wife Maren were also visiting. The two had only recently married and seemed particularly joyful today. Something was in the air. “We wanted to share something with you!“ Maren said with a radiant smile, looking at Tim lovingly. Tim smiled back, put his hand on Finni's shoulder and said, „Congratulations, Finni – you're going to be an uncle!” For a moment, time seemed to stand still. „What? Really?” Finni finally managed to say in disbelief. A wave of joy spread through him that he could hardly grasp.

**Part 2.** He immediately fell into Maren and Tim's arms, congratulating them, while the reality of the news slowly sunk in: he would actually become an uncle. As soon as he had processed the joyful message, he picked up the phone to tell his girlfriend Romina and, of course, his best friends Steve and Dorothee. And the next day, he couldn't wait to proudly announce to all his classmates at school that he would soon be an uncle. The word “uncle” sounded incredibly old to him at 17, but it filled him with a deep sense of anticipation for what was to come. A few months later, the time had come. The winter's day was dark and cold, but when Finni visited Maren in the hospital, that changed abruptly. Maren smiled as she handed him a small bundle wrapped in blankets. “Here he is,” she said gently. Finni gently took the newborn in his arms, and at that moment the whole world seemed to brighten. Tim and Maren had named their son Kiran, which means “beam of light”.

**Part 3.** An apt name, Finni thought, because although the day was gray and gloomy, this little creature in his arms radiated like a beam of light. Holding his nephew Kiran in his arms for the first time was one of the most beautiful moments in Finni's life. Everything around him seemed to fade away, and he felt only the warmth and life of this little creature, whose heart beat so gently and full of hope. In that moment, he knew that a new chapter was beginning – not only for his family, but also for him. He would be the best uncle Kiran could ever wish for. 

Tim and Maren had taken the brave step of opening a small shop together, where Finni worked as a temp from 1997 to 2000. A special highlight in this small family business was little Kiran. He was like a beam of light for the staff, brightening their days, and he always made customers smile with his childlike charm. Finni took every opportunity to use his breaks to spend time with his nephew.
