It's the symbol of his order as per the story. He carries it as part of his duty but also for remembrance 

Through all this wretched desolation I have carried the black rose of my nigh on extinguished order.

Throughout the long wars of the conquering, Erdolus was a land fractured and devouring itself. They called upon us, the Stygium Knights, to bring about the Obsidian Order, to end the wars by any means necessary.

How quickly those of us that survived are discarded for the ugly memories our terrible work recalls. Now they wish to live in the comfort and prosperity our blood and iron forged.

I have been exiled to the thousand mile sojourn. To arrive at the ancient bastion of my order, the Priori Jugernaus, or die en route.

For months I have trod through forest and savannah, hunting and foraging with little discomfort, but this desolation is the final leg, and the true test.

What I will find, when and if I survive, I do not know. It has been decades since I gazed upon it's fuligin parapets, devouring the light of the world.

Baratoum strode into the private audience hall. Guards crossed halberds before him, but with a flick of the king's wrist, they stepped aside. Baratoum smiled icily and approached to within a few feet, making a lazy bow.

"It's been many years, father, though I was never far away until recently, in your dungeons. I'd have appreciated a visit."

Ferlamund didn't answer for long moments, when he did, his voice was haggard.

"Plagues, the woman, now you, vile thing. Always she whispers, now your voice is alongside hers. You're the same, plagues."

Baratoum sighed and sat at his father's feet.

"I like your high heels, very fashionable. The mask is a bit much, however. Aren't you tired, my kingly father? Wouldn't you rather rest and abdicate? I promise the whispers will cease."

Ferlamund flicked his wrist, the audience was over. Baratoum left without bowing again, his knights trailing behind.
