I hated being a teacher on April Fool's Day. But that changed 20 years ago when I started teaching, straight-faced, a fake historic event. I made this up entirely. Zero truth to it...The Horseless Jello Initiative was a grassroots movement in the US during WWI that sought to address the shortage of gelatin, a key ingredient in jello, by developing a new type of jello that did not use horse hooves as a source of gelatin. The program was inspired by reports of horses having their hooves removed to provide gelatin for the war effort. The initiative gained national attention in 1918 during the 4th of July parades across the country, which all had horses in them with stumps instead of hooves. Instead of hooves, they had bandaged stumps, army boots, tennis shoes, or scuba diving flippers. These became know as the Jello Parades. Missing from my lecture, though, has been images. This year I am using AI to produce my first images for this lecture. This is what I have so far….
