The Long Slide Home
The crowd was already on its feet before the throw left the outfield.
Bottom of the ninth. One run separating victory from defeat. The tiger broke for home as the lion crouched behind the plate, glove ready and eyes locked on the incoming ball.
Dust exploded. Claws stretched forward. The tag swept down.
For a heartbeat, nobody moved.
The tiger stared at the plate.
The lion stared at the umpire.
The stadium held its breath.
Then came the call.
SAFE.
The roar that followed could be heard far beyond the ballpark.
Some games are decided by power.
Some by skill.
This one was decided by a whisker.
