Her toes floating above the abyss her feet felt heavy. Doubt creeping up her spine. Were she to take another step, just inching forward the tiniest bit, she would lose her balance and fall, fall, fall into a stream of events she would not have any control over.

She had travelled here unnoticed. Not because she hadn't been noticed for her fiery hair and roguish black apparel but because people actively decided not to notice and to willingly forget her passing by, intimidated into blissful amnesia by the silent stare and the more than obvious silhouette of a knife not meant for cutting onions under her coat. She was the person you felt better seeing them leave unnoticed, rather than attracting their attention to what riches may hide in your pouch or your home. 

Were she to set foot in this sorry excuse for a drinking house she would concede control to someone who had seen in her in her most vulnerable moment and, instead of using her weakness, decided to smile, pull her back and leave.

_My heart feels no joy to meet you here_, the deep and sombre voice of the Barbarian woman growled over the tavern's banter. Deep inside, Peine winced but thought better than to let emotion show on her face. She looked to the side, fondled her glass uneasily, and took a sip. 

She did not know what was worse. Having to fraternize with a band of outlaws utterly unwilling to have anything to do with her were it not for the gentle but relentless persuasion that came with them owing her? Or drinking what passed off as a beverage in these parts? How she yearned for only a sip of the famed wines of Londres! Her countryfolk would be preparing themselves for the first harvest, ready to pluck the first grapes from the vines, still sour and refreshing, the early fermentation resulting in a sugary sweet wine that tasted like heaven coated in honey.

Douce coughed politely, returning Peine to the sour reality of the rundown tavern in which they were sitting.

After Peine had left their table, Linn and Wei stared at each other in silence for a moment. A random drunk stumbled against their table, belched loudly, and continued to sing a smutty song before passing out under the table.

Wei frowned while Linn smirked. _I'd have half a mind to join in_, she mused. _But if our harper friend is going through with her insane idea of a plan we will need all our brains._

Raising an eyebrow, Wei replied: _I suppose you're right. Do you believe she is being honest with us?_

Linn shook her head. _Nah. Them harpers are charming alright, but..._ She stopped and scratched the back of her head, her curls bouncing. Failing to come up with a witty reply, she shrugged. _She's hiding something. Probably better for her, too. I wouldn't trust myself in her place. How did she get you to come here?_

_Beginner's luck?_ Wei tried helplessly to deflect the nosy question. _Let's not... I mean... please?_

_Suits me_, Linn shrugged. _Have one on me, sister._

Peine forced herself to smile. Noticing how she failed to appear convinced she pursed her lips trying to come up with a witty remark.

Failing that as well she shrugged apologetically. 

The rogue cast her eyes down, observing the harper's hands, her every fingers' movements, the slightest bend of her gloves when she pressed her knuckles against each other. 

With a tiny sigh she laid her left hand upon Peine's nervous gloves and squeezed them lightly and awkwardly. She had once read in a book that this might be something people did to reassure them. She wished she could be picking locks right now. Locks were easy to read and handle. When you made a mistake, you started over again.

People would never become her speciality. But apparently, she could not let her sister down.
