My mind boggles too.  Just reading the Wikipedia entry on solar sails makes me realise how our everyday experience limits our thinking.  Until the steam age, sails would have been the paradigm for thinking about propulsion, so maybe those speculating about solar sails weren't as ahead of their time as we think.  Even so ...
