When the first rays of the new sun hit the tiny droplets of water that sprayed from the waterfalls of Kush they reflected the frail morning light into a prisma of luminescent reawakening. 

She stopped for a second, lured into a moment of melancholic weakness she could not afford. Falling down, gliding between the prismatic light, and finally vanishing into the water had to be the most relieving and wonderful experience fate could grant a misfit like her. She felt the abyss beneath her toes again, the way her mind felt light and without a care, when she had finally been ready to pay the ultimate price for that reckless race she had been calling life for the past years.

The sensation of soothing fingertips hidden in soft leather gloves that suddenly and carefully touched her wrist ever so cautiously, without prejudice or judgement, crept up on her. She took a step back from the ledge, sighed heavily, and began to fasten the coil of rope she had brought with her to a tree.

06/ The ledge

10/ Preparing for the first trial

With careful steps and experienced gaze she slowly descended from above down into the canyon that had formed from eons of water patiently flowing over the rocks.

The real danger was not falling down and getting crushed on the stone. No, the real danger would be falling down and breaking a leg so you could not hide anymore. If Bog would sniff you out (and they would), you became their next appetizer. You could only hope for being dead by then - preferably before you had to endure the horrible stench from their foul and putrid mouth...

She really hoped the trap would spring or they at least would create a diversion that would buy her enough time to slip through.

11/ Setting up the trap

Douce and Linn had been travelling since before the break of dawn. Their feet hurt, they began to feel hungry and the worst part of their mission was yet to come. 

Why did it have to be trolls, Douce wondered half aloud. She was always ready for a hearty tavern brawl or some knocking about of unassuming bandits who miscalculated their non-existent chances of landing a score with their pouches. Even the occasional bear or mountain lion that crossed paths with her on the wrong day were nothing to boast over after a long day of adventuring.

But a troll? Really?

She wondered why she and that smug and loud-mouthed ranger had been instructed to provoke the beast and lure it out of its lair. After all, being chased by an enraged troll would prove rather dangerous.

After they had bellowed some moderately charming remarks about the troll's mother and her questionable bodily odours in the general direction of the troll cave, Douce and Linn exchanged a quick but telling glance right before the sun darkened and the air felt colder and rather smelly.

_By my grannie's rotten tooth..._ Linn cried out.

_I suggest we run._ Douce suggested while trying to move away from the towering mass of stench, muscles and surprisingly sharp teeth.

_Second that!_ Linn shouted, grabbed Douce's arm and ran.
