The most terrifying kind of person is the kind who has nothing left to lose. Someone who has reached, and surpassed their breaking point many, many times, and simply has lost the ability to give a damn. While these characters generally aren't the focus of the story, (outside of the actual villain) they make for very interesting side characters, and subplots. As a protagonist, or an obstacle, an entire setting shutters when these men/women are forced to take action. The shuttering is made so much worse if the character was once the kindest soul one could meet. Someone who was leading a good life, with family, friends. But this was all taken from him, or worse, was betrayed by them. Either way, if a man has nothing to lose, there's nothing he can't do.
