Best Friends Forever... Part 7

When Nikki had first moved to town, it had felt like it was the two of us against the world for a while. As fearless and fun as she was, the other girls in class never really took a liking to her. It was a small town, so when she showed up with her dark clothes and adventurous spirit, she probably stood out too much for their tastes.

I think they liked her even less when the boys started to take notice too.

I did warn her about Trevor, about the kind of person he was. They had gotten to know each other over the semester in Study Hall. She insisted he was actually pretty sweet and nice to her.

It was... infuriating.

That summer, she invited me with them to hang out at the lake. I didn't really want to go, but I also didn't want to leave her alone with him... so I went.

Of course Trevor was all smiles, but I could tell he wasn't happy she'd brought me along. His friends would try to distract me by being nice in that fake sort of way, but I made sure to never stray far from her.
