Xolotl was the dog god of the Aztecs, depicted as a dog or a figure with a dog's head. He guided souls through the dangerous journey of the afterlife, through the underworld. The underworld had nine layers, and Xolotl led the dead through all of them. His was not a glorious role. He was associated with deformity, misfortune, and disease. Someone had to do it.
