Sylph

The Sylph is an airy spirit from Renaissance alchemical tradition, first popularized by Paracelsus in the 16th century rather than traditional folklore. Described as wingless but capable of flight, Sylphs are invisible beings of the wind, moving effortlessly through the sky like living breezes. Some later depictions give them delicate, almost transparent bodies with feathered wings, but earlier sources emphasize their formlessness, appearing as gusts of wind or shimmering figures that dissolve into the air.

Unlike true folkloric fey, Sylphs were originally conceptualized as elemental spirits of air, part of a mystical framework rather than a product of oral tradition. However, their light, elusive nature has led to their inclusion in later fairy lore, where they are sometimes depicted as guardians of the skies, messengers of fate, or playful tricksters stirring the wind.
