Prince Kringlar walks out onto the balcony over the Noble River and gazes at Milisara, a local peasant girl. Every day Milisara collects firewood and berries for her family, and every day Prince Kringlar watches, wishing that he were a commoner, or she a princess, so the ancient conventions would allow them to marry.
Meanwhile, a tiny elephant frolics on the bank of the Noble River, playing with a ball, heedless of any rules or conventions about the size of elephants, or the drinking of water from the Noble River, or the playing of ball games on its banks.
How happy was the elephant; how sad the prince.
