“Welcome Gracelynn Thyellodis,” A powerful voice called through the room. The Head Seer, a figure beneath the hood of a grey cloak, turned to face me. Silver and blue threads, like veins of ice and sky, pulsed around the edges of her hood and cuffs, hinting at the power she wielded.
I dared not speak, my voice caught in my throat. Instead, my eyes darted around the room, seeking anything familiar, anything to ground me. My gaze landed on the skylights, distant pinpricks of blue in the inky ceiling.
"You have been chosen by fate to become an Aegis Seer," the Head Seer's voice filled the chamber. "To protect the kingdom of Euthēnia from forces of the living and the dead. This responsibility is given only to the best, to those who survive training." Her words hung in the air, heavy with implication. "I know, like many before you, you do not wish for this. But you will protect your kingdom, your family, and your friends."
Something inside of me then snapped…
