Melanistic jaguars and leopards (dark coated ones who appear black) are usually known as panthers, which can be confusing as a black panther could be either a jaguar or a leopard, depending on whether its new world or old world. Size apparently matters. (don't take my word for any of this, I looked it up and am briefly summarising from memory)
