This comes from somebody's photo. Cats like the roosting arrangement for giving birth and raising kittens. If they do so beside a particularly '*broody*' hen with no chicks, she'll often take over sheltering them when mama cat is out hunting, or even resting. Barn cats are usually known to get along very well with most other farm animals.

Years back before AI, an elderly Japanese man made a few videos of the relationship between his lone chicken and a kitten he adopted, till the kitten was an adult. Every night when the chicken returned to its roost, the man placed the kitten with it. It would spread one wing and shelter the kitten under it. Even as an adult, the cat would return to the chicken each night. It was funny to see the outstretched wing lying on the cat's back as it was now so big. Even outside during the day, the two were never far apart.

It does make me wonder about how aware animals are of species difference.  Konrad Lorenz' work with geese imprinting suggests it may not be as big a factor as we might assume, at least until breeding age.
