After recieving a life saving blood transfusion from Bruce Banner, Betty discovered a month later that she could transform into a female Hulk.  A mugger attempted to steal her valuables and car.  Angered by this, Betty transformed and easily defeated her assailant.
Looking at her reflection, she realised that even though she was taller, more muscular, and now had green skin, eyes and hair, she still resembled her normal self.  She didn't look like Banner's Hulk, and more importantly she was in full control, not a raging behemoth.
Returning to her human form, now wearing ripped clothing, she sought out Banner at Avengers Tower, and he became her guide into how to master her new abilities.  Tony Stark designed a series of outfits that she could wear under her normal clothes, ones that would stay intact in both human and Hulk forms.
Dubbed She-Hulk by the media, Betty is now an Avenger, whilst also being an attorney.
