Pfluger blushed. “Dang ol’ guilty as charged there, ma’am—ain’t even gonna argue it, tell ya what.  Heard you was from Katy, that right?”

Helena was surprised. “Yes. How’d you know?”

"Man, I heard ya talkin’ to your CO earlier, got that soft kinda 'how’s-yo-mama-nem' voice, know what I’m sayin’? That Katy sweet tea tone, man, real gentle like. Ain’t no mistakin’ it,” Pfluger replied.

“You’ve got a good ear.”

“Dang right. Spent summers haulin’ hay, fixin’ fence, dodgin’ copperheads, and losin’ bets to my cousin Ricky, man, every time.”

“In Katy, we had flooding, mesquite barbecue, and too many cousins to keep track of,” Helena said, reminiscing of home.

“Yeah, man, Texas big like that, I tell ya. You grow up with all that heat n’ family drama, you get real good at mindin’ your own business and fryin’ catfish,” said Pfluger. The two both laugh softly, then Pfluger continued. “Kinda wild though, right? We out here, man, dang ol’ alien planet, medieval town, freakin’ Stargate, space gods n’ laser beams—an’ I still sound like I oughta be at a Friday night fish fry.”

Helena nodded. “We both do.”

“Ain’t no leavin’ home behind, Sister. It’ll hitch a ride in your bones ‘fore you even know it.”

“That it will,” Helena replied.

Fairbairn, who was sitting next to Helena,  was in awe of her teammates understanding of the Texan’s ramblings. She had spent the better part of the day with the man and couldn't understand him. 

“Sister, how do you understand him?”

Helena smiled. “He’s my fellow countryman. We can understand each other. I also had some uncles from the Chief’s neck of the woods. It just takes some getting use to, that’s all."

“Dang ol’ just like it takes me a bit to figger out yer Scottish lingo an’ whatnot, ma’am,” Pfluger replied. “But thanks to the Commander, I done had me some practice, tell ya what. Folks keep sayin’ I remind ’em of dang ol’ Boomhauer on *King of the Hill*.”

“Never seen that show,” said Fairbairn. “But I’ll take a look at it.”


Helena sat down next to Fairbairn and Pfluger. After saying grace. She began to eat.

“Evening, Sister,” said Pfluger. “Dang ol’ are ya settlin’ in all right there, ma’am—gettin’ yourself all comfy an’ whatnot, tell ya what?”

“I am, chief,” Helena replied. She took a bite of her barbecue beef and grimaced. “I’ve tasted better, but it’s not bad. Still... ‘You are to eat whatever may have been given you’.”

“Where’d ya say the best dang barbecue’s at, ma’am—round here or what?” Pfluger asked.

“Midway Barbecue on Highway 90 in Katy,” Helena replied.

“You talkin’ Central style or East style there—sauce or no sauce?”

“Central, with a smidgeon of East.”

“You oughta try Two Rivers Smokehouse up in Calvert, ma’am—best dang brisket an’ ribs between Aggieland an’ Waco, tell ya what.”
