Both my grandmas were dirt poor and it must've been hard to scrape enough money for boat fare. One came from Austria as a young unmarried woman with her younger sister, fleeing an unhappy home with an abusive stepmother. The other came from Hungary with her youngest son, my father. I wish I could've heard their stories but both died when I was a child and never had the chance or even thought of it then.
