The raindrops as they fall look like a lot of vertical (or maybe slightly slanted) hyphens.
Later in the same paragraph, the same author likens the falling rain to Morse code in the sky, because each raindrop on its way down looks like a little dash.
Earlier in the same paragraph, the author describes the sky as “dashed, flashing.”
