Here the path of destiny split. To left and right, it led to tunnels descending to chthonic furnaces, and ahead into the great towers of ascent, through whose timeless libraries one could rise to the very pinnacle and gain access to the boiling heavens. The question was not whether the pilgrim could choose the correct path, but whether he could complete his quest before the impending apocalypse.
