Long had they dwelt under the ground, in dark grottoes and musty caverns, hiding in shame and fear from humanity. They had practised their sinister religion in secret, invoking perverse powers through blasphemous rites. Their heresy had twisted them into a hideous and inhuman race, and their minds and hearts were possessed of a savage loathing of their sibling species. They had nursed this dark hatred, and multiplied, and their malignant rot had spread across the land, turning the lush forests above into twisted wastelands, blighting the crops, and bringing famine and pestilence to mankind. And now, as their numbers swelled, they were emboldened to rise to the surface by the light of the full moon and recite the invocations that would channel their cruel, chthonic gods and unleash them above ground. The war on humanity had begun.
