Emily’s brother Ben, always the pragmatic one, would be thrilled. She could already hear his voice: “Em, you can do this! You’re destined for greatness.” But it was her own heart that raced, the thrill of achievement mingling with a touch of trepidation. The path ahead was uncharted, and she was about to step onto it with both feet.

The letter, crisp and official, bore the signature of Doctor James J. Stewart, Registrar of Immunology. His words echoed in her mind: “…by your high marks at St. Christopher’s Catholic College Medical School, we would be only too pleased for you to further your studies with us and complete your degree here.” The honour was immense, and Emily’s pulse quickened. She imagined dissecting cadavers, attending lectures by eminent professors, and unravelling the mysteries of the human body.


But then reality struck like a sudden gust of wind. Thursday! That was tomorrow—the day she was expected at the Chancellor’s office. Panic fluttered in her chest. She needed to make arrangements, and quickly.

Emily connected with the operator in the village, she then connected her to father. His deep baritone filled her ear, a comforting presence even from miles away. She explained the situation—the acceptance, the urgency, the opportunity. His response was immediate: “Em, my girl, this is your chance. Go forth and conquer. Your mother and I are proud beyond words.”

Yet, he had a request—one that tugged at Emily’s heart. “Speak to your mother first,” he said. “Perhaps she’ll accompany you to London. It’s a journey worth sharing.”


Emily found her mother in the garden, sunlight dappling the rose bushes. Mrs. Dowsett’s hands, once delicate and nimble, now bore the marks of years spent nurturing both blooms and family. Emily hesitated, then blurted out the news. Her mother’s eyes widened, and for a moment, Emily thought she might embrace her daughter. But Mrs. Dowsett merely adjusted her sun hat and said, “I’m feeling poorly, dear. The journey is too much for me.”

Emily’s heart sank. She had hoped for her mother’s companionship, a shared adventure. But perhaps this was her test—to stand alone, to prove her mettle. She kissed her mother’s cheek, the scent of roses clinging to her skin, and whispered, “I’ll make you proud, Mother.”


As Emily sat at her father’s antique desk, the sun filtering through the study window, she clutched the acceptance letter in her trembling hands. After sealing the envelope of her letter to Ben, she began reading this new missive to her. The words danced before her eyes, a symphony of possibility and promise. The London Medical College—the very name resonated with prestige and opportunity. She had dreamed of this moment for years, and now it was real.
