After the weekend opening, Stanley Kubrick let the epilogue scene cut from every film reel existing and destroy the material. It had transpired that the early audiences were too confused when the hotel manager visited Danny and his mother in hospital, bringing him a tennis ball. This is the only surviving frame in color, as re-imagined for the museum of lost movie scenes.

The reality behind this: Everything is true. The scene did exist. But it was located at a hospital reception desk, not a hospital room.
