There was much more to Barbara Cartland than her novels.
She took an interest in the practical application of gliders, and with two RAF officers was the co-designer in 1931 of a towed glider for the delivery of airmail. She also arranged for a record-breaking 200 mile towed flight. This led indirectly to the development of the gliders that delivered allied troops and equipment to Normandy on D-Day. She was awarded the Bishop Wright Air Industry Award in 1984.
She also promoted the role of women in motorsport. After taking umbrage at comments about women's driving abilities, she arranged the first women-only race at Brooklands.
