Will sat in front of the small TV in the garage, his eyes glued to the screen, his stomach twisting with every word the news anchor said. The screen showed images of the wreckage from the night before—the twisted, charred remains of the RX-7 and the school bus that had been carrying children home from a late-night field trip. Flames still licked at the metal frame, and thick, black smoke billowed into the night sky.

The news anchor’s voice was somber, almost clinical, as she delivered the devastating report: no survivors. The anchor’s voice cut through his thoughts again. “Authorities are ramping up their investigation into illegal street racing across Japan. Police believe last night’s deadly crash is linked to an underground racing group operating between Kyoto and Tokyo.”
