Elizabeth 'Bessie' Sheppard of Papplewick was murdered in 1817 on the road that led southward through Harlow Wood, Nottinghamshire, by wandering former soldier Charles Rotherham. Rotherham was arrested, confessed and hung for the crime, but he could provide no reason for his actions. A memorial stone was later erected near the site of Bessie's murder. The stone is still there to this day, among bushes beside the A60 between Mansfield and Ravenshead.
