As the corporate conglomerates grew in power, they developed large security wings, rivalling and eventually supplanting the government police forces. These security wings ranged from hired punk street gangs, through trained, uniformed security crews, up to special units.
The special units comprised elite cyborgs. They were recruited from the most promising of the security crews - tough, ruthless and loyal - and then augmented with state-of-the-art upgrades by the conglomerates' cybernetics, security and biotech wings. They were relentless, remorseless, terrifying killing machines that could be tasked with clandestine missions including data snatch jobs, demolition, and even assassination of rival firms' executives.
