A little bit about penicillin: 

At the dawn of the 20th century, the world stood on the brink of a medical revolution. It was a time when biotechnologies were just beginning to emerge, and humanity was yet unaware of the power of antibiotics, when a serendipitous discovery turned everything upside down.

On September 13, 1928, something remarkable happened in the modest London laboratory of scientist Alexander Fleming. Upon returning from a vacation, Fleming discovered that one of his Petri dishes with bacteria had been contaminated with mold. But instead of the expected disappointment, he noticed that the bacteria around the mold colonies had died. This was Penicillium notatum — the fungus that became the first source of antibiotics in history.
