I got the same kind of results as you with the “non-pro” models. You can access dall-e 3 for free on Bing (you just need to create an account). Many creators here experiment on Bing to refine their prompts before spending credits here (and you can also import images created on Bing or elsewhere here).

I would like to understand why Raphael's prompt includes "the steam... transforming into a graceful, smoke-like figure," while mine turns out as if it were about "a matchstick fairy."

It's good to see it works without a starter image. I always hold my breath when I push the create button, my husband is always laughing at me since sometimes I'll even cover my eyes 😆 (it's all part of the fun.) A prompt can go so wrong (I must waste several credits a day on failures 🤣 ) other times though a wonderful creation appears.
