Energy Secretary Claire Coutinho this morning addressed a special Easter Monday press conference to confirm UK commitment to being first to operate a Space Solar Power Station.  "An additional £6 billion is significant, but a modest investment if one considers the disastrous consequences of climate change," Ms Coutinho said.  "We need to do everything possible to achieve net zero before 2050.  Having an SSPS online in the next six years could bring that forward by as much as a decade."

Asked whether the announcement was merely a campaign stunt ahead of the general election, the Secretary responded: "While the objectives of the SSPS project remain similar to those proposed in 2022, the additional funding will put UK research and development well ahead of China's Bishan project.  We choose to be the world leader not because it is easy, but because it is hard.  We'd be foolish not to."
